Superman Returns
By Al
Dave and I are both totally psyched about the new Superman Returns movie coming out in just over a months time. A few days ago IGN released the official poster for Superman Returns. For a higher resolution image click on the poster on the right. That thing is awesome!
Superman Returns is also being released at the IMAX in IMAX3D, where they’ve converted 20 minutes of the film into 3D footage. Both of us have decided that there is NO way that we’re going to miss out on that. We want it big, and we want it large. And in 3D. Oh yeah!
Dave and I are now in a race. We’re going to see who can be the first to get one of those on our wall. I’m semi-winning because I have the teaser poster already along with a fantastic memorial framed picture of the late Christopher Reeve.
The Superman Returns trailer is outstandingly mindblowing. There’s also a new TV spot that was aired during the Season 5 final. Warner Bros have kindly put it on the web for your viewing pleasure in multiple formats;

Windows Media Player: 56k | 100k | 300k | 500k
QuickTime: 56k | 100k | 300k | 500k
RealPlayer: 56k | 100k | 300k | 500k

It’s actually kind of scary. It’s so freaky how much Brandon Routh not only looks like Christopher Reeve (see image below) but also how much he sounds like him too. I can’t imagine them casting anyone better than Brandon to be honest.

See what I mean?
Smallville itself is something that’s been kicking up a storm for both Dave and myself. We’ve just finished watching the end of Season 5 and it was amazing. We almost can’t believe we have to wait till the end of September for the chilling conclusion to one of the biggest cliffhangers we’ve ever seen.
Smallville, based on the DC Comics characters and partly inspired by the graphic novel “Superman for all Seasons“, it depicts a young Clark Kent struggling with youth as he develops new powers and slowly becomes the superhero we all know as Superman. During the second season a lot of people stopped watching because they got tired of it being about the latest “freak of the week”. Whilst I still liked it, they changed all that in Season 4 with one of the best written season-length story arcs on TV, and they’ve done it again with Season 5.
One of the brilliant things that they chose to do was to have Clark as friends with a young Lex Luthor (just as in the comic series upon which Smallville is based). Lex starts out good but throught the five seasons you can see him slowly becomming the evil villian that will rival Superman by the time of the movies.
Obviously for those in the UK (or elsewhere) who haven’t seen it yet, I’m not going to release any major spoilers, but one thing I will say, is that he’s virtually there now. The picture below is not from a dream sequence. And that’s terror and destruction in Metropolis that you see from the top of the LuthorCorp building.
Seriously, if you ever stopped watching because of the freak of the week… then you’d better make sure you start watching from at least the last half of Season 3 or the premiere episode of Season 4 (depending). Seasons 1-4 are available on DVD from Amazon.com (for US) and Play.com (for UK). Play.com are already accepting pre-orders for Season 5 which is due for release on 28/08/2006.
TheWB were not kidding when they said that Season 5 is “The Season that changes everything”.

bah i need to start watching smallville. i think the funniest thing about superman returns is that the movie producers had to digitally reduce the size of superman’s “bulge” because they were hearing too many complaints on how it was too big. lolol

I used to adore smallville, but I got REALLY f**ked off with having to watch 5 f**king seasons! :@
So now it’s a bunch of sh*t. It was heaps better in the early seasons.

The majority of shows have a 5-7 season run. A few get cancelled before then, and some (such as Friends and Stargate: SG-1) go on for almost twice that amount.
Personally (as everyone is entitled to his/her opinion), I love how Smallville has changed. It’s nice to see these huge story-arcs which are already leading towards Clark becoming Superman, and then it’s also great to go back to the early seasons for the single episodes where Clark’s still discovering new powers (compared to now where he’s refining them) and the freak-of-the-week.
But overall, whilst I loved the early seasons at the time, they just don’t compare to the last two.
I can’t wait for season 6.

Seriously, if lost goes on for this long, I’m going TO STAB THE DIRECTORS!!
