When You Can’t Escape the Land of Nod

By Al

As usual, lots has happened, and not necessarily good things. So, where to start?

Well I finally got around to seeing Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest. Now there’s 150 minutes of my life I want back. I really loved the first movie but this one was dire; the script was terrible, the characters were so poorly written that they didn’t even feel like their original characters and there were a lot of what I’ll call cameos from the first movie who feel as though they’re only there for the sake of it to make it feel more like the first one.

When I first heard of the idea for the movie I thought that it would be absolutely brilliant - the idea of seeing Davey Jones (famed for his locker - aka the deepest depths of the sea - which many a sailor has been thrown into) etc, but the whole plot revolving around the chest felt so pointless. To be honest, it felt more like they were ripping off the first one, having yet another curse in another chest.

It also felt incredibly rushed and this time I didn’t care much about the characters. I must also add that I wasn’t that impressed with Johnny Depp either, and I think that that’s possibly a mixture of two things; shoddy screenwriting and the fact that this is the first time he’s ever reprised a role for a sequel. After years of doing one project and character then moving onto the next might be making it harder for him to reprise his role properly, but I’m not sure. I think that the script is definitely most to blame though.

The cliffhanger at the end (don’t worry, I won’t spoil it) was surprising and might make for an interesting conclusion to the trilogy, but after this abismal sequel I won’t be holding my breath.

There’s a new tv series that’s been airing in the US recently called ‘Heroes‘. I managed to get Dave into it, and not only that - he’s seriously hooked! So much so, that he’s contacted the official fansite and both of us have been asked to contribute content to it. Not sure if I’ll accept the offer yet because it’s a huge task, but I’m entertaining the idea. I’ve still yet to finish another website called TV-IRC which I’m behind on making (which is the understatement of the year) so that’s a higher priority right now.

Seriously though, if you get the chance to then you should check it out. It’s about a group of people from all over the world who slowly begin to find that they have special abilities; two of whom have seen the future and with it the annihalation of New York City. It’s essentially “Lost” meets “X-Men” and done surprisingly well.

Today I came to the conclusion that the Olive Luna theme that’s included with Windows XP reminds me of stomach bile. What?!?

Yesterday I almost bought myself an iPod Nano. I walked into a shop, and almost bought it on impulse. Then I thought to myself that not only would it be cheaper from the Apple Online Store, but I’d be able to get an educational discount too because I work at a high school. The standard price for the iPod Nano on the Apple Online Store is about £10 cheaper than Currys Digital, so all was looking well until I checked out the price of the educational discount. Now I don’t know how this is possible, but it’s 1p more expensive than the standard price. Still, ever since their first introduction, I’ve always wanted an iPod, even despite the battery problems of the earlier models. One day soon, I shall own an iPod and I shall get it engraved with Apple’s free engraving service and on the back it shall read;

Experience
The Choad

The only problem is that I name all my devices. There’s all my computers that I listed in my last post, I also have two phones (Ziggy and Gooshie; kinda in honor of Quantum Leap) and so now I’m going to have to think of a name for my new iPod Nano when I get it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

On a side note, Dave’s named his new 1st Gen iPod Shuffle, “MoodStick”.

But before the whole almost-buying-an-iPod incident, something else happened. Something pretty bad.

I usually wake up at 7am in order to be up and ready in time to get to work for 8:15am. If I’m going to the gym then I get up about 5:30am to be able to get to the gym for 6:30am.

Yesterday I did not go to the gym.

Yesterday I did not get up at 7am.

Yesterday I overslept.

I arrived at work at 3:30pm - making me 7 hours and 15 minutes late - which so far is my current record for tardiness.

It might partly be due to the fact that on Saturday night I stayed over at a friends new house. Unfortunately my friends didn’t realise how thin the floors in this new house are and as a result I heard sex for the first time.

It was seriously disturbing.

The kitchen door is a sliding one and even it was banging away almost as much as they were from how much they were causing the house to shake (I wish I was exaggerating).

I’m just glad that I don’t know enough about sex to have gotten a proper visual….
